The Short Answer
Good deeds cannot purchase salvation. The New Testament presents eternal life as God’s gift and salvation as an act of grace received through faith in Christ.
Ephesians 2:8-10 gives the relationship clearly. Salvation comes by grace through faith, and believers are then described as created in Christ Jesus for good works. The works matter because they belong to the life that follows grace.
Christians therefore have strong reasons to pursue justice, generosity and faithful service. Those actions express obedience and living faith. They do not place God in a debt that He must repay with heaven.
Grace, Faith and the Place of Good Works
The Bible can speak very strongly about judgment according to deeds while also teaching salvation by grace. The two themes address different parts of the same Christian life.
Good works reveal what a person loves and how faith is being lived. Grace remains the foundation of salvation.
