What Does Genuine Repentance Look Like?

The Short Answer

Genuine repentance is a real turning toward God that begins with recognising sin and leads into changed direction. It includes confession where confession is needed and a willingness to obey what God shows you.

Repentance can be imperfect while still being real. A Christian may still face temptation and may need time to repair habits. The important movement is away from defending the sin and toward truth, obedience and reliance on God’s grace.

Jesus and the apostles often connect repentance with visible fruit. Luke 3:8 speaks about fruits worthy of repentance, and Acts 26:20 describes deeds that fit repentance. The fruit grows from the turning rather than replacing it.

The Shape of Repentance in Scripture

Repentance reaches the mind, will and conduct. It changes how a person sees the sin and what they choose to do next. That change may involve immediate action or a longer process of rebuilding faithful habits.

The Bible gives concrete examples. Zacchaeus responds to Jesus with restitution in Luke 19. His response shows repentance moving into the way he handles the harm connected with his old life.
