Main Answer
The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch because the growing community had become publicly identified by its allegiance to Christ. The name likely came from people outside the church and meant those belonging to, or associated with, Christ.
Antioch contained a mixed community where Jewish and Gentile believers worshipped together. Barnabas brought Saul to help teach the church, and they remained there for a full year (Acts 11:19-26).
The new label suited a movement whose defining centre was Jesus. Its members came from more than one ethnic background. Its original tone may have been neutral or mocking, though Acts does not state the speaker’s intention.
Why Did the Name Appear in Antioch?
Antioch was a major city of the Roman world with people from many cultures. The church there grew when scattered believers began speaking about Jesus to Greeks as well as Jews.
The community became visible enough to require a public name. Outsiders could see that these people formed a distinct group centred upon Christ.
Jerusalem remained important, while Antioch became a major base for mission. The name appears in a city where the gospel was crossing cultural boundaries.

What Did Christian Mean?
The ending of the word can indicate belonging to a leader or party. Christian therefore identified a person as connected with Christ.
Acts normally calls believers disciples, brothers and sisters, saints or followers of the Way. Christian appears only a few times in the New Testament.
The label eventually became a central self-description because it expressed allegiance to Jesus in a concise public form.
Antioch’s role becomes clearer in the complete Acts guide, which follows this diverse church as it becomes a sending centre for the wider mission.
