Can People in Heaven See Us?

The Short Answer

The Bible does not say that people in heaven continuously watch everything happening on earth. Some passages allow the possibility that those with God have limited awareness of events connected with God’s purposes, yet Scripture never gives us a picture of deceased relatives observing every ordinary moment of our lives.

Hebrews 12:1 speaks of a great cloud of witnesses after the examples of faith in Hebrews 11. The image encourages believers to run faithfully. Revelation 6:9-11 portrays martyrs before God who know that justice on earth is still incomplete.

Those passages support a modest answer. Awareness may exist, but its extent is left unstated. Christian confidence can rest in God’s knowledge rather than in trying to imagine who in heaven may be watching us.

What the Main Passages Establish

The main passages for Can People in Heaven See Us? are Hebrews 12:1 and Revelation 6:9-11. They should be read for the claims they actually make rather than used to fill gaps Scripture leaves open.

Questions about the dead often carry grief as well as theology. A careful answer can state what Scripture supports, identify where Christian traditions differ and leave uncertain details with God.
