Main Answer
Colossians was written to strengthen a faithful church against teaching that threatened to draw confidence away from Christ. Paul wanted the believers to understand that the fullness of God dwells in Jesus and that they are complete in Him.
The letter also explains Paul’s ministry and calls the congregation towards maturity. He warns against human tradition, severe regulations, angel worship, visions and religious judgement while directing attention to the cross and resurrection of Christ.
Paul’s purpose reaches beyond correcting error. He teaches the Colossians how their union with Christ should transform character, church life, households, work, prayer and witness.
The Pastoral Purpose of the Letter
“As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him.”
Colossians 2:6, KJV
Epaphras had reported that the Gospel was bearing fruit in Colossae. Paul begins with gratitude because the church has genuine faith and love. The danger appears to be pressure from teachers who judged believers by food, sacred days, ascetic practices and spiritual experiences.
Paul answers by placing Christ at the centre of every section. The believers received Christ Jesus as Lord, and their continued life must remain rooted in Him. The warning is therefore a call to continue in the true Gospel rather than search for another level of spirituality.
Key point
Paul wrote so that the Colossians would remain rooted in Christ and live out the new life they had already received.
