Why Is John 21 Included After the Gospel Appears to End in John 20?

John 21 is included because it completes important parts of the Gospel’s witness after the purpose statement in John 20. It restores Peter publicly, shows the disciples’ continuing mission, clarifies a rumour about the beloved disciple and confirms the testimony behind the book.

John 20:30-31 reads like a formal conclusion because it explains why the signs were written. Ancient works could contain an epilogue after a concluding statement. Chapter 21 functions in that way, returning readers to Galilee for one final encounter with the risen Jesus.

The chapter also answers a pastoral question left open by the passion story. Peter denied Jesus three times. The Gospel now shows the risen Lord feeding him, questioning him and calling him again to follow.

“These are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.”

John 20:31, KJV

Readers who want to follow this theme through the whole Gospel can continue with the complete explanation of John (available to our members also).

The Extra Study below examines John 21 as an epilogue, follows its links with earlier scenes and explains how the final chapter strengthens the Gospel’s themes of mission, restoration and witness.
