Who Was the Disciple Whom Jesus Loved in the Gospel of John?

The disciple whom Jesus loved is traditionally identified as John the son of Zebedee, and early Christian testimony strongly connects the Gospel with John. The Gospel itself never gives the beloved disciple a personal name, so the precise identification remains a matter of careful discussion.

This disciple appears at the final meal, stands near the cross, runs with Peter to the empty tomb and recognises Jesus beside the sea. John 21 presents him as the witness behind the written account and says that his testimony is true.

The title “whom Jesus loved” highlights relationship and witness rather than claiming that Jesus loved only one disciple. The unnamed figure becomes a trustworthy observer who remains close during decisive moments.

“This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.”

John 21:24, KJV
