What Was the Sin of Simon the Sorcerer?

Main Answer

Simon the Sorcerer’s sin was attempting to buy spiritual authority so that anyone on whom he laid hands would receive the Holy Spirit. His request treated God’s gift as a power that could be purchased and controlled for personal importance.

Simon had believed Philip’s preaching and had been baptised. He then saw the Spirit given through the apostles and offered them money for the same authority (Acts 8:9-24).

Peter answered with a severe call to repentance. He exposed a heart that remained captivated by status and spiritual power, even after Simon had entered the company of believers.

Why Did Simon Offer Money?

Before Philip arrived, Simon had amazed the people of Samaria through magic and had received public praise. The gospel displaced the reputation he had built.

He continued with Philip and marvelled at signs and miracles. His offer suggests that he viewed apostolic authority through the habits of his former life.

Simon wanted the ability associated with laying on of hands. Peter saw a desire to possess and use the gift. Simon’s heart lacked humble dependence upon God.

May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!

What Does Simony Mean?

The later word simony comes from Simon’s name. It describes buying or selling church office, spiritual privilege or sacred influence.

The passage reaches beyond cash payments. Any attempt to turn ministry into personal possession reflects the same distorted direction.

God gives the Spirit according to His promise and purpose. Spiritual authority remains a trust received for service.

Simon’s story sits within the Samaritan movement of the complete Acts guide, where the gospel crosses an old boundary and exposes the difference between spiritual spectacle and genuine faith.
