How Can I Know I Am Saved?

The Short Answer

Christian assurance begins with Jesus Christ and the promises attached to trusting Him. The New Testament tells believers that eternal life is found in the Son and that those who believe can know they have eternal life.

Assurance also includes a present relationship of faith. A person looks to Christ for mercy and continues in repentance when sin is exposed. Growing fruit can support assurance by showing the direction of that faith.

Christian traditions explain perseverance differently, so they describe the certainty of assurance in different ways. They still direct believers toward Christ and away from constant self-measurement.

Assurance Starts With the Object of Faith

The question can easily become a search for a perfect internal feeling. The New Testament repeatedly directs attention outward toward Christ and His promise.

First John was written in part so believers could know that they have eternal life, and it combines that confidence with tests of living faith.
