The Short Answer
You can know God’s forgiveness by trusting the promises Scripture gives to those who confess sin and turn to Christ. First John 1:9 assures believers that God is faithful to forgive and cleanse when they confess their sins.
Forgiveness rests on Christ’s work, so your confidence can be grounded in what God has promised. The intensity of your emotions can rise and fall. Feelings of guilt sometimes remain after genuine repentance.
A faithful response includes confession and a changed direction. Where your sin harmed another person, repentance may also require taking responsibility for what can be repaired.
God’s Promise Gives the Main Ground for Confidence
First John was written to help believers walk in the light and have fellowship with God. Its teaching about confession belongs inside that life of faith.
The promise directs a guilty conscience toward God’s faithfulness and the cleansing provided through Jesus.
