Main Answer
The church in Corinth was divided because believers turned Christian teachers into rival party names and measured ministry through status, eloquence and public influence. Paul answered by directing the whole church back to the one crucified Christ, who alone had died for them and in whose name they had been baptised.
Members said that they belonged to Paul, Apollos, Cephas or Christ. Paul and Apollos were fellow servants, yet the Corinthians used their names to create competing identities. The quarrel reflected habits from Corinthian public life, where speakers gained honour through followers and polished performance.
Paul treats the dispute as spiritual immaturity. Jealousy and rivalry show that the church is still thinking through ordinary ideas of rank. Christian leaders plant or water, while God gives growth. Every worker serves on the foundation already laid, Jesus Christ.
Why This Passage Matters
The question “Is Christ divided?” exposes the contradiction at the centre of the factions. The church belongs to one Lord. No preacher, teacher or tradition can become a substitute for that shared allegiance.
Paul also changes the measure of leadership. Apostles are servants and stewards who answer to God. Their value comes through faithful work under God’s judgment.
Key point
The same concern returns across the letter. Wealth divided the Lord’s Supper, spiritual gifts became competitive and knowledge was used without love. Paul repeatedly calls the church to build one another up.
“Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you?”
