Main Answer
The main message of 1 Thessalonians is that God has called His people through the gospel to live faithfully in the present while waiting with confidence for Jesus to return. Paul joins active faith, loving service, holiness and resurrection hope within one pastoral message.
Paul writes to a young church that has received the gospel under pressure. He gives thanks for its work of faith, labour of love and patience of hope, then teaches the believers how to continue growing.
The return of Christ appears throughout the letter. This future hope strengthens present obedience and gives comfort concerning believers who have died.
How the Whole Letter Carries This Message
The opening chapter describes conversion as turning to God from idols, serving the living God and waiting for His Son from heaven. Those actions give the letter a simple movement from a changed allegiance into faithful service and future hope.
Chapters 2 and 3 show pastoral care during separation. Chapters 4 and 5 apply the gospel to sexual integrity, work, grief, readiness and congregational life. The final prayer places confidence in the God who faithfully sanctifies His people.
Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
