Main Answer
“Pray without ceasing” means to maintain a continuing life of dependence upon God in which prayer returns throughout the day and remains part of every season. Paul is not commanding uninterrupted speech. He calls Christians to a settled practice of bringing worship, need and thanksgiving before God.
The command appears among short instructions near the end of the letter. It stands beside rejoicing always and giving thanks in every circumstance.
Paul’s own prayers throughout 1 Thessalonians show what this looks like. He remembers the church, gives thanks and asks God to complete His work.
A Life That Keeps Returning to God
Prayer without ceasing describes constancy of relationship. Formal times of prayer matter, and brief prayers can also rise during work, travel, decisions and pressure.
The command belongs to the church as well as the individual. Believers pray for one another and carry shared needs before God.
Pray without ceasing.
1 Thessalonians 5:17, KJV
