What Did Jesus Mean by “Before Abraham Was, I Am”?

When Jesus said, “Before Abraham was, I am,” He claimed existence before Abraham and used wording that carries the weight of divine identity. He did not say that He merely existed earlier. He used the present expression “I am” while speaking about a man who lived many centuries before His earthly birth.

The response of the listeners confirms the seriousness of the statement. They picked up stones after hearing it. Within John’s Gospel, the words belong to a sustained revelation of Jesus as the eternal Son who shares the life and glory of the Father.

The saying also completes an argument about Abraham. Jesus explains that true children of Abraham welcome God’s truth. Abraham rejoiced in God’s promise, while the people confronting Jesus resist the One through whom that promise reaches fulfilment.

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.”

John 8:58, KJV

The Extra Study below follows the argument about Abraham, explains the force of “I am” within John and considers how this saying shapes Christian belief about the identity of Jesus.
