Description
Uncovering Scripture
Understand the Complete Gospel of Mark
Follow Jesus from the opening announcement of the gospel through His ministry, journey to Jerusalem, crucifixion and resurrection.
Mark: Uncovering Scripture is a complete study of the Gospel of Mark written by Pastor Ellis Carrow.
The guide explains Mark as one connected account. It follows the questions surrounding the identity of Jesus and shows how the cross gives meaning to His authority, mission and call to discipleship.
Mark presents Jesus as the Christ and Son of God whose authority is revealed through teaching, healing and victory over evil. The Gospel then leads the reader towards Jerusalem, where Jesus serves by giving His life as a ransom for many.
What You Will Study
The guide begins by explaining what Mark is about and why the Gospel was written. It considers the early connection with John Mark and Peter while handling questions of authorship, date and audience with care.
A complete reading map then shows how the Gospel develops through its natural movements. The guide follows the early ministry in Galilee, the growing conflict around Jesus and the road that leads from Peter’s confession to Jerusalem.
The guide covers:
- The beginning of the ministry of Jesus
- His authority over sickness, evil and nature
- The parables and the hidden growth of God’s kingdom
- The road from Peter’s confession to Jerusalem
- The temple conflict and the call to remain watchful
- The arrest, crucifixion and empty tomb

The Main Themes of Mark
The Authority of Jesus
Mark shows Jesus teaching with authority and confronting forces that ordinary human power cannot overcome. He forgives sins, commands the sea and restores people whose lives have been shaped by suffering.
Recognition and Spiritual Sight
The Gospel repeatedly asks who Jesus is. Crowds marvel at His works, religious leaders resist Him and the disciples understand slowly. Mark shows how true recognition grows when Jesus is allowed to define His own identity and mission.
The Way of the Cross
Peter’s confession begins a new stage in the Gospel. Jesus teaches that the Son of Man will suffer and rise, then calls His followers to take up their own cross and follow Him.
Service and True Greatness
The disciples often seek status or position. Jesus places service at the centre of greatness and presents His own life as the model for authority among His followers.
“For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
Mark 10:45, KJV
Questions the Guide Explores
- Why does Mark begin without a birth account?
- Why did Jesus sometimes command people to remain silent?
- Why was the blind man in Mark 8 healed in two stages?
- Who was the young man who fled during the arrest of Jesus?
- Why does Mark place so much attention on misunderstanding and fear?
- Why does the earliest recoverable ending of Mark finish so suddenly?
