The Short Answer
The unforgivable sin is the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit that Jesus warns about in Matthew 12:31-32 and Mark 3:28-30. In Mark’s account, religious teachers had watched Jesus free people from demonic oppression and then claimed that His power came from Satan. Jesus answered that charge with one of His strongest warnings.
The warning concerns a deliberate spiritual judgment about the work of God. The people in the scene were given clear evidence of Jesus’ work and chose to call that work demonic. Mark links the warning directly to their accusation in Mark 3:30.
Christians differ over the exact limits of the warning, especially over whether the sin is one specific act or a hardened pattern of resisting the Holy Spirit. The safest reading keeps Jesus’ warning serious and keeps it tied to the situation that caused Him to give it.
Why Jesus Gave This Warning
Matthew 12 and Mark 3 place the warning inside a conflict over Jesus’ authority. His opponents were searching for an explanation that would allow them to reject what they had seen. Their accusation reached beyond ordinary doubt because they identified a work of deliverance as the work of evil.
The passage therefore deserves careful reading before someone applies it to an intrusive thought, an angry sentence or a season of spiritual fear. Jesus was answering a sustained accusation made in the face of His public ministry.
