The Short Answer
According to the historic majority Christian reading of the New Testament, bodily death ends our present physical life while personal existence continues before God. For a believer, the strongest passages point toward being with Christ after death. Scripture gives fewer details about the first moments than many popular stories suggest.
The Bible also connects death with accountability before God. Hebrews 9:27 places death and judgment close together, while other passages look toward a later public judgment. Christian traditions describe the timing in different ways, yet they agree that death leaves every person in God’s hands.
The safest biblical answer is therefore relational. The body dies. The person remains under God’s authority. Those who belong to Christ have strong reason to hope in fellowship with Him.
The Bible Gives a Clear Centre
Luke 23:43, Philippians 1:23 and 2 Corinthians 5:8 are central to the historic Christian understanding. Jesus promises the dying criminal paradise with Him. Paul describes departure from this life as being with Christ and speaks of being absent from the body and present with the Lord.
Those passages should be read alongside biblical language that calls death sleep. Christians disagree over what the sleep language describes. Some apply it to the body at rest. Others understand an unconscious state until resurrection. The New Testament still keeps the dead within God’s care and authority.
