• What Does “Firstborn of All Creation” Mean?

    Main Answer

“Firstborn of all creation” means that Jesus holds the supreme rank and inheritance over creation. It does not mean that He was the first being God created. The surrounding verses say that all things were created through Him and for Him.

In biblical language, firstborn can describe status and authority as well as birth order. Psalm 89:27 speaks of David being appointed firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth, even though David was not the oldest son in his family.

Colossians uses the title to declare that Christ has priority over the created order. He exists before all things, sustains them and must have first place in everything.

Reading the Phrase in Its Context

“Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature.”

    Colossians 1:15, KJV

The phrase appears inside a passage that praises Christ as Creator, sustainer, head of the Church and firstborn from the dead. Paul defines the title by the claims that follow it. Every created power belongs under Christ because it came into being through Him.

A reading that places Jesus within creation would conflict with the immediate argument. Paul’s point is that Christ stands over creation and also leads the new creation through His resurrection.

    Key point

Firstborn describes Christ’s supremacy over creation and His rights as the Son, not His origin as a creature.

The passage and its wider Christology are explained in the complete study of Colossians.

The Extra Study below explores the biblical use of firstborn and follows Paul’s argument through creation, resurrection and worship.
