The Short Answer
According to the historic Christian reading, sex belongs within marriage, so sex before marriage is treated as sinful. The Bible uses broader language than the modern phrase “sex before marriage.” The conclusion comes from the way Scripture connects sexual union with marriage and repeatedly warns against sexual immorality.
Genesis 2 provides the one-flesh pattern. Jesus uses that pattern in Matthew 19. First Corinthians 7 directs sexual desire toward marriage, and Hebrews 13:4 honours marriage and the marriage bed. Read together, these passages provide strong biblical support for the traditional Christian position.
Some contemporary Christians argue for more room within committed unmarried relationships. My reading gives greater weight to the repeated marriage-and-sex pattern across Scripture. Each reader should examine the passages carefully and take responsibility for the conclusion they reach before God.
How the Biblical Case Is Built
The term translated “sexual immorality” or “fornication” often represents the Greek word porneia. Its exact scope changes with context, so one occurrence should not carry every detail of the argument. Its repeated use shows that the New Testament communities recognised sexual boundaries.
The biblical case also depends on the positive theology of marriage. Sexual union is given relational and covenantal meaning. This lets the larger scriptural pattern do the work.
