Does Christian Perseverance Mean Staying in a Harmful Situation?

Main Answer

Christian perseverance does not require staying in a harmful or unsafe situation simply to prove endurance. Jesus can call disciples to faithfulness and also tell them to flee from one city to another when persecution makes departure necessary.

The devotional on perseverance states this directly: remaining in harm is not the same as faithfulness. Safety deserves action, and endurance can involve leaving, seeking help and continuing to follow Christ from a safer place.

The key distinction is between abandoning faithfulness and changing the setting in which faithfulness is practised. Leaving danger may protect life, dignity and the ability to continue responsibly.

Where abuse, threats or serious danger are involved, practical safety and appropriate professional or legal support may be necessary. Christian language about perseverance should never be used to trap someone in harm.
