The Short Answer
Christians should repent honestly of sins they know about, yet Scripture does not make forgiveness depend on perfect memory of every wrong act, motive or omission. Human beings do not possess that kind of recall or self-knowledge.
Psalm 19 asks God to cleanse the writer from secret faults, showing awareness that some wrongdoing can remain hidden even from the person who committed it. The tax collector in Luke 18 asks simply for mercy as a sinner, with humility and dependence on God.
When a forgotten wrong later comes to mind, deal with the responsibility that remains. Repentance should become more truthful as awareness grows. It does not need to become an impossible search through every memory before God is allowed to forgive.
Repentance Requires Honesty, Not Perfect Recall
Specific confession matters because it prevents vague repentance from becoming a way to avoid responsibility. If you know you lied to someone or caused harm, name the act and consider what repair is appropriate.
Scripture also recognises limited self-knowledge. Psalm 19:12 asks, “Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults” (KJV). The prayer assumes that a person may need mercy for wrongs they do not fully perceive.
The Christian life therefore combines honest confession of known sin with trust in God’s fuller knowledge. Memory is useful for responsibility, but it cannot carry the weight of salvation.
