The Short Answer
Scripture does not teach that every use of alcohol is sinful. Wine appears within ordinary meals and celebrations in the Bible. Drunkenness, however, receives direct and serious condemnation.
A Christian who drinks can therefore focus on sobriety and self-control. Personal circumstances also matter. Someone with alcohol dependence may need complete abstinence because any drinking carries a strong risk of losing control.
Drinking alcohol by itself does not provide enough information for a human verdict about eternal destiny. Where drunkenness or harmful dependence is present, repentance can lead toward change and practical help.
The Biblical Line Is Clearest Around Drunkenness
Ephesians 5:18 directly warns against drunkenness. First Corinthians 6 includes drunkenness in a serious warning about patterns incompatible with the kingdom of God.
At the same time, Scripture contains ordinary references to wine. That wider picture supports a distinction between alcohol itself and intoxication.
The practical question is whether alcohol remains within responsible freedom. If drinking repeatedly leads to impairment, conflict or neglect of duties, the issue has moved into clearer moral territory. A believer can respond by changing the pattern rather than using the mere existence of wine in Scripture to defend harmful use.
Moderation also requires honesty about personal limits. Someone who repeatedly intends to have one drink and ends up intoxicated has useful evidence about their own pattern. The wiser response may be abstinence. Christian freedom includes the freedom to choose a stricter boundary when it protects faithfulness.
