What Does the Bible Say About Signs From Dead Relatives?

The Short Answer

The Bible gives no teaching that encourages Christians to look for signs from dead relatives. Its clearest guidance moves in the other direction by warning against attempts to seek information from the dead and directing God’s people toward Him.

Deuteronomy 18:10-12 condemns practices associated with divination and consulting the dead. Isaiah 8:19 asks why a people would seek the dead when they should seek their God.

Those passages address deliberate spiritual practices. They also give a useful principle for ordinary experiences after bereavement: guidance should come from God, while coincidences can be held lightly.

What the Main Passages Establish

The main passages for What Does the Bible Say About Signs From Dead Relatives? are Deuteronomy 18:10-12 and Isaiah 8:19. They should be read for the claims they actually make rather than used to fill gaps Scripture leaves open.

Questions about the dead often carry grief as well as theology. A careful answer can state what Scripture supports, identify where Christian traditions differ and leave uncertain details with God.
